Jobs & Accommodation Project

In January 2023, with the accommodation situation in Ireland becoming increasingly acute, Effective Aid Ukraine looked to alternative ways of placing Ukrainian refugees in sustainable accommodation. Thus was born our Jobs & Accommodation project, which seeks to match Ukrainian refugees seeking employment in a number of sectors with Irish employers who also have accommodation available.

These are employers who would traditionally have sourced labour form outside Ireland to fill roles which are difficult to fill locally. The jobs initially identified include fruit-picking, flower-packing, warehouse work and carers in nursing homes.

Effective Aid Ukraine, in partnership with Kaizen Workforce Solutions, has already successfully carried out a pilot project with a warehouse operator in the South of Ireland, placing 10 refugees in jobs with accommodation. These refugees each came from the same emergency accommodation centre in the Midlands where they lived five to a room.

In their new jobs they have rates of pay which are above the minimum wage. They each have their own bedroom. They have free transport to and from their work and also get subsidised breakfast, dinner and tea. All also have access to a gym.

Effective Aid Ukraine’s approach to national projects of scale is to prove an idea, repeat it, and then scale it. We are now looking to replicate the success of the pilot project with 10 new warehouse roles and then home to scale the project to 200 roles

Our initial goal is to place 200 Ukrainian refugees in jobs with accommodation.

As well as transforming the lives of refugees, improving their accommodation, giving them meaningful work at god rates of pay, the jobs & Accommodation project also frees up emergency accommodation which may be used by other refugees.

It provides employees to Irish companies who need them and it provides a considerable saving to the State. We estimate that if and when we meet our initial target our project will have saved that State over €8m annually, solely on accommodation and welfare costs.
